Excel or Power BI for a Sport Scientist?

29 November 2023

Why I Moved from Excel to Power BI as a Sport Scientist ?

As a Sport Scientist, I've spent years analysing data to help athletes develop and perform at their peak. In the early stages of my career, Microsoft Excel was my go-to tool for data analysis. While Excel is powerful and versatile, making the move to Power BI has been both a game-changer and a necessity.

Here are some key reasons why Power BI is superior to Excel:

1 -  Data Integration
In sports science, we often deal with data from multiple sources—wearables, video analysis, medical reports, and more. Power BI allows for seamless integration of these varied data sources into a single dashboard.

2 - Advanced Visualisation
Power BI offers a wide range of advanced visualisation options that go far beyond the basic charts and graphs available in Excel.

3 - Scalability
As data sets grow, Excel can become slow and unresponsive. Power BI, on the other hand, is built for handling large volumes of data without compromising on performance.

4 - Collaboration
Power BI enables multiple users to collaborate on the same report or dashboard. This is incredibly useful for interdisciplinary teams in sports science, where physiologists, biomechanists, and nutritionists need to work together.

5 - Customisation
With Power BI, I can create custom calculations and metrics specific to sports science—something that would require complex formulas and macros in Excel.

Switching to Power BI has not only streamlined my data analysis process but also opened up new avenues for deeper insights.

So, if you're still on the fence about making the switch, I highly recommend giving Power BI a try. ??
